Energy Conversion

4th graders are system engineers exploring systems. Through hands-on investigation, rereading a portion of the Systems book, and class discussion, students explore the parts and functions of various systems in order to answer the question What is a System? Students work in groups to build a simple, solar -powered electrical system from a kit of materials.The class discusses the various parts of this system and their functions and draws connections to the parts and functions of the larger electrical system.

 

Plant Propagation

 

Fifth grade plant propagation. Students learn the importance of photosynthesis and the significant purpose on why this chemical reaction is vital to plants.

Dear Parents, Guardians & Students.

 

Welcome back students and families to the 2022-2023 school year at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs! 

 

I would hope that everyone had a great summer.

 

My name is Edward Montas and I am very delighted to introduce myself as the Science teacher for grades four through eight. Our faculty and staff at OLQM are ecstatic to return to school in person.  My commitment to teach your child using  Next Generation Science Standards through hands-on lessons and experimental training which will prepare their minds for new and upcoming challenges of an ever changing world.  

The protocols and challenges linked with COVID-19 have normalized and it is safe to say that this year will be filled with wonderful surprises, trips and outdoor activities leading to the exploration of science.

 

Mr. Woods has posted several announcements on the school blog with updated information about the upcoming school year. Please take the time to check it periodically. The building will be open to parents making communication between parent and teacher more feasible.

 

I have posted the school supplies necessary for this upcoming school year term below.

 

I am anticipating a pleasant year teaching Science to your child.

Back to School Supply list for Science Classes of 2022-2023

   

Grades  4 - 8 

• 1 marble notebook (no spiral notebooks)
• 1 folder (plastic ones from supply room)
• 1 packs of loose-leaf
• 2 packs of pencils/ 1 pack of Crayola color pencils & Markers 
• 2 Elmer's Glue sticks
• 2 Pencil erasers
• 1 Sharpener
• 1 pack of Expo dry erase markers
• 4 packs of lined index cards (Important)

7th Grade Homeroom 

• 2 rolls of Bounty paper towels
• 5 containers of Lysol/Clorox wipes
• 3 boxes of Kleenex tissues

Additional supplies will be asked of students to bring when conducting science experiments.

Scholastic Science Magazine 

Students in grades 4-5 will be using Super Science bi-weekly. Students in grade 6-8 will be using Science World.

Introduction to Amplify Science 

Amplify Science is a new blended curriculum for grades K–8 that meets 100 percent of the Next Generation Science Standards. A rich blend of physical materials and digital learning tools, the multimodal program includes: detailed lesson plans, hands-on activities, scientific texts, robust simulations, engaging media, physical and digital models, formative assessments, benchmark assessments, and a variety of embedded teacher supports and professional development options.

With Amplify Science, students learn to talk, read, write, think, and argue like scientists and engineers through investigations of real-world problems and scientific phenomena, gaining the skills needed to master the NGSS.

Report Cards

First Quarter Report Cards 

Sent home on November 12th for all students in grades K-8. Students who are remotely learning will have their report card 

e-mailed to them through their olqmnyc.org e-mail.

There is no PreK report card at this quarter.

Zoom meetings will occur for Parent Teacher Conferences on 

Friday November 13th from 1:00 PM - 6:00PM.

Parents will be requested to e-mail their child's teacher and the teacher will set up the available time for the Zoom meeting. 

Zoom meetings will be set for 10 minutes each to 

accommodate all parents.

Parents can begin the conversation via e-mail beforehand by checking their child's Educate grades. 

As a reminder Tuition must be up to date to receive the report card and to be part of the Parent Teacher Conference.

 

Remote Students

 

November 6, 2020 

Parents who wish to change from remote to in person may do so on November 6th.

An email must be sent to Mr. Woods at olqm1@aol.com requesting for the child to switch into in person.

 There is no space in the second grade as the 

classroom is maxed out at 16.

 If space is available then:

As per the regulations of the Superintendent of Schools: 

  The student gets medical clearance and

 a negative COVID PCR test result.

Homework Posting

Homework posting will be posted on Google Classroom for each teacher. Parents in Grades 2-8 must check the different Google Classroom accounts that their child has for each of their teachers. As an example students in second grade have four teachers:

Mr. Mattsson - ELA/Social Studies

Ms. Wong- Mathematics

Ms. Alma - Religion and Music

Mr. Montas - Science

each of those Google classroom accounts that have been set up by the teachers have to be checked daily. Every child has a Google Classroom account and it is important to check the Google Classroom account daily.
